Young Messi first became interested in football, and in 1995 he joined the youth team of Rosario-based top-division team Newell’s Old Boys. Messi also contributed to Barcelona’s victory in the third Triple Crown. He scored 41 goals in all competitions for Barcelona in 2015–16, helping the club win the Copa del Rey and the La Liga title. Messi set a new mark for Barcelona in 2016–17 with 53 goals, leading the club to yet another Copa del Rey victory. He contributed to Barcelona’s 2017–18 La Liga and Copa del Rey victories with 45 goals. With 51 goals across all domestic competitions, Messi led Barcelona to a second La Liga championship in 2018–19. In the latter part of 2019, he was presented with both the FIFA award for best male player of the year and his sixth Ballon d’Or of his career. Barcelona won the 2020–21 Copa del Rey, Messi’s seventh trophy overall. He was largely unable to resign with Barcelona once he became a free agent in 2021 due to financial issues, some of which were caused by La Liga regulations. He left the team with a number of records, including the most league goals ever scored (474). Later on, Messi signed with Paris St. -Germain, where he played alongside superstars Kylian Mbappé and Neymar. That same year, he also won a second Ballon d’Or.
